She has won several awards for her work, including the American Library Association Award for Best Historical Novel for her book 'Bitter Greens', and Aurealis Awards for multiple titles. In recognition of her contribution to Australian fairytale culture, she was awarded the Australian Fairy Tale Society Award in 2018.
