The moon has been captivating our imaginations for as long as people have been watching the skies, steeped in symbolism and energy that evolves with each wax and wane. But did you know that those same lunar energies can be used to enhance your spiritual practice each new or full moon?
Over the years, Rockpool has published a wide range of moon oracle cards and books, as well as an annual lunar diary. We know that aligning your practice to the moon’s natural phases can have many benefits, regardless of whether you’re a beginner witch or seasoned practitioner.
In this guide, we’ll explore how you can harness the energy of full and new moon phases for your next ritual, how you can track these cycles over time, and practical ways to broaden your magickal awareness under the moon.
What Is a Moon Ritual?
A moon ritual is a practice or ceremony tied to the lunar cycle, used as an act of self-care to promote mindfulness, reflection, and personal growth.
They generally involve simple ritual practices, including journaling, meditation, and the creation of a sacred place during the full moon or new moon phases of the lunar cycle.
There is no right or wrong way to perform a moon ritual, as the true purpose will always depend on what you hope to gain from it.
Most commonly, however, people perform moon rituals, full moon or new, to:
- Set intentions — clarify your goals and desires.
- Create mindful routines – give structure to your spiritual practice.
- Practice gratitude — reflect on the good in your life (past, present, and future).
- Release negative energy — let go of any unhelpful thoughts, feelings, and habits.
- Enhance spiritual practice – track and tune into natural lunar cycles, channeling the moon’s waxing and waning energies to empower goal-setting and self-reflection.
- Cleanse or create spiritual tools - leave your crystals out under the full moon to cleanse their energy, and empower their natural properties, or embrace this perfect time and make moon water to anoint your tarot cards, yourself, and other spiritual tools.
Full Moon Rituals & New Moon Rituals: What’s the Difference?
Both full moons and new moons have distinct lunar energy, and understanding how they differ is key for anyone looking to effectively channel that energy for their spiritual ceremonies.
For example, new moons signify new beginnings and are best suited for setting goals and intentions, while full moons are a time for gratitude and releasing the things that no longer benefit you.
Before we dive into how you can enhance your spiritual practice across the lunar cycle, let’s compare the key differences between full moon & new moon rituals and what they mean for you:

Letting Go During the Full Moon
Did you know that there are roughly 12 to 13 full moons each calendar year? If you’re someone who likes to take a moment at the end of each month to pause and reflect as part of your spiritual practice, the full moon is an ideal time.
You don’t need a special set of tools for a full moon ritual, just something to write with, a journal or piece of paper, a candle, some moon-charged water, and the moon.
Step-by-Step Full Moon Ritual
1. Create a Calm Space
Find a quiet space on a night when the full moon is clearly visible. Close your eyes, and take a few deep, focused breaths until you feel calm and relaxed. You can light a candle at this stage if you want to, or play some music, but it isn’t essential – the main goal is finding your peace.
If you’d find breathwork and meditation easier outside, take yourself to a safe and comfortable spot. You’re not limited to the indoors, and there’s no set “best full moon ritual” to suit everyone.
As renowned witch and author Fiona Horne believes, it can help some spiritual seekers to “go down to the ocean at sunrise, and put [your] feet in the ocean, and give thanks to the Great Mother, and ask her to help us wash away our pain, or our struggles, so that we can be more useful service to the world."

2. Take Time to Reflect
When you’re ready, take a piece of paper and write down everything you want to let go of. Every negative thought, feeling, or habit from the past month (or longer, there is no time limit on reflection) that no longer serves you is destined for this page.
If you’re struggling with where to start, it can help to ask yourself questions like:
- What is no longer benefiting me?
- What worries and ideas am I getting stuck on every day?
- What’s keeping me from living my life to the fullest in the way that I want to?
- What do I doubt about myself?
- What do I want to move past?
- What am I most afraid of?
Pulling one to three oracle cards can help you set your intentions at this stage too, as you seek to find out what needs to be released, what’s coming to light, and what your best next steps are.

You can sign your list to formalise this deal with yourself and the universe, but only if you’re comfortable. This is for you, and as long as you believe that you’re ready to part with these feelings, you’re in control of your spiritual lunar journey.
3. Release What No Longer Serves You
Once all your worries have been put to paper, it’s time to release them. Take your candle and safely light your list, burning away those negative thoughts.
If you don’t have a candle on hand, or don’t want to set anything on fire, you can always tear your paper instead, or bury it in the ground. While the act of burning serves as a visual representation of negative energy leaving, burying symbolises a return of that energy to the earth, so the result is the same, and you should rid yourself of it in whatever manner feels authentic to you.
4. Cleanse & Recharge Your Positive Energy
Now that you’re free of negativity, it’s time to fill your soul with positive energy. There are several ways you can do this, including:
- Taking a cleansing salt bath
- Practising everyday self-care through rituals and recipes for the lunar phases
- Charging your crystals in the light of the full moon
- Reflecting on and celebrating the things you’re most grateful for
- Making a jar of moon water to cleanse, bathe in, and empower your spiritual work

Setting Intentions During the New Moon
New moons happen whenever the moon sits directly between the sun and the Earth, about every 29.5 days. This means that we’re almost always going to see one each month, and while the actual astronomical event is only visible for a moment, the “lunar reset” of the moon’s near disappearance marks an opportunity to channel its energy and harness its renewal power.
Whether you seek a fresh start or simply an opportunity to chart a new path in the coming months, a new moon ritual can be a simple, effective means of regularly welcoming wellness, meaning, and order into our lives.
Like with full moon manifesting rituals, you don’t need any fancy tools to perform a new moon ceremony. Some paper and a pen will do, with candles, crystals, or your favourite oracle cards if you want a more immersive experience.
Step-by-Step New Moon Ritual
1. Create a Safe Space
On the night when the new moon is occurring, find a place that’s far removed from your daily stresses and activity. A ritual on the new moon is about starting anew, and you don’t want to be weighed down by your space from the first step.
This doesn’t mean you have to leave home, even if you don’t have a dedicated room for your spiritual wellness practice – a cosy corner or comfy chair can be just as effective.
2. Stop, Breathe & Reflect
Once you’re settled into your space, it’s time to focus on finding calm to reflect. There’s no rulebook on how to do this, so try whichever method of relaxation works best for you, whether that’s breathwork, meditation, or listening to something that calms you, like white noise or ocean waves.
Do this for as long as you need, and think about the time since your last ritual while you do. If this is your first one, that’s okay; you can focus on the last month, or the things that feel highest priority to you. You can note your thoughts down if you’d like to, but the priority at this stage is still on your relaxation.
3. Look Ahead & Consult Your Cards
Now comes the future, and imagining yourself in it. Think about the space you’re in, where you are in your life, and where you want to be, either next month as you repeat the ritual or well into the future.
For many people, this is a good time to clarify what it is that they need to focus their energy on, and help to eliminate tasks or burdens that aren’t as important as our mind would have us believe. If you’re not sure how to get started, you might want to ask yourself:
- Who do you want to be in a month’s time?
- What do you want to change, and what do you want to be doing instead?
- What do you hope to have achieved?
- What do you want to have left behind you?
Your oracle and tarot cards are strong support tools during this stage, helping to guide you and focus your attention for the next moon cycle. Three-card spreads are popular for insight here, using one card to represent the previous lunar cycle, another to symbolise the present, and the last to portray the upcoming cycle.
It can also help to note down what you’re thinking, whether you do that on a spare sheet of paper or in a dedicated moon reflection journal. You may even want to turn some of these points into a to-do list, and set yourself on a clear path moving into the next ritual stage.
4. Set Your Intentions
Take a moment to reflect on what you’ve learned, and ask yourself: what do my desires have in common, and is there one goal I can set that will help me achieve them?
Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed and need more time to rest, or maybe you’re feeling stuck and need to make a professional change. Once you’ve identified your goal, it’s time to set it, whether that means speaking it into being, adding it to your spiritual altar, or writing it down in your lunar diary.
Your intention is your own, and a tool on the way to attracting the life you want to lead. While it isn’t an overnight solution, this focus can give you the time and direction you need ahead of your next new moon renewal – or full moon ritual, if you regularly perform both lunar ceremonies.
Tracking Your Magickal Lunar Practice Over Time
While lunar rituals provide a dedicated moment in time to focus on reflection, release, and renewal, you can draw on the moon’s waxing and waning energies throughout its entire cycle.
For many people, the ceremonial practice provides all they need to enhance their spiritual journey. But for others, tracking the lunar cycle can look like:
- Using a moon phase tracker or calendar — if you follow a lunar calendar for your hemisphere or track the moon phase forecast in your area, you’ll be well positioned to align your actions and intentions to the energy you seek.

|
- Keeping a moon journal or diary – if your aim is on reflection and growth, it can help to track your emotional progress and habits across the lunar cycle, whether you choose to do this with a moon calendar or a diary designed for your hemisphere’s cycle:
- Gathering under the moon – while some people prefer a private moon ceremony, you can gather your friends beneath the new or full moon to amplify the moon’s unique energies with shared celebration.
“You'll be surprised as a coven when you start really working magic together that your dreams become aligned ... you'll find that everyone will start dreaming similar things, which is super interesting."
