About the Author

Heidi Phelps is an American writer and artist based in Washington, DC, whose personal journey deeply influenced the creation of the Black Violet Tarot. Crafted during a profound period of motherhood and the loss of her own mother to cancer, Heidi’s deck is illustrated entirely in black and white, capturing the bittersweet dualities of life—shining light through moments of darkness.

Her artistic style is shaped by a rich tapestry of influences, from Edward Gorey and Victorian mourning traditions to vintage sewing patterns, Grimm’s fairy tales, and the surreal works of Salvador Dali. Heidi also draws inspiration from iconic artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, Frida Kahlo, and Marjane Satrapi.

When she’s not sketching, Heidi enjoys life with her husband Erdem, their daughter Leyla, and their two beloved cats, Eddie and Daisy.

A beautifully illustrated deck that inspires reflection, artistic expression, and shines light through life’s bittersweet moments.
